Where the Wild Things Are

Maurice Sendak

Where the Wild Things Are
Publisher: RED FOX
Publication Date: 04/05/2000
Format: Paperback
Walk on the wild side

Max is sent to bed without any supper for chasing the dog with a fork and threatening to eat his mother up, and he’s cross about it. He imagines his room becomes a jungle, and he takes a private boat to where the wild things are. The wild things attempt to frighten Max, but he tames them, and leads them on a wild rumpus! Before long, though, Max feels lonely, and wishes he could be with somebody who loves him. He travels back to his bedroom, where he finds his dinner waiting for him.
Maurice Sendak’s story about the cross little boy and his imaginative journey to where the wild things are is a seminal work of children’s literature. The distinctive illustrations bring Max and the wild things vividly and energetically to life. The entire story is told using only 338 well-chosen words, making it the perfect length for bedtime, or any time. Perhaps most importantly, even very young children seem to understand instinctively that the wild things and Max’s feelings are linked somehow, and they find comfort and protection in the cross little boy who’s just like them.
