Supreme Survivor

‘Moving, powerful and clear-sighted, it is an unforgettable book.’ – Antony Beevor

This astonishing and unique memoir was written by a survivor of both the Soviet and Nazi concentration camps.

Margarete Buber-Neumann was a member of the German Communist party. From 1935 she was a political refugee in Moscow, before being arrested in 1938. In Under Two Dictators Margarete describes the two years of suffering she endured in Soviet prisons and in the huge Central-Asian concentration and slave labour camp of Karaganda. She was then extradited to Germany, where she experienced a further five-year ordeal in Ravensbrück. She describes the fate of fellow prisoners, the behaviour of the guards and secret police, and compares Stalin and Hitler’s methods of dictatorship and terror.

First published in English in 1949, this edition includes previously unpublished material and an introduction by award-winning author Nikolaus Wachsmann. Although harrowing in its depiction of life under these brutal regimes, this is an inspiring story of survival.
