Diesels In Scotland

Scotland after steam
W. J. V. Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most widely respected of railway photographers. In this book by his son, a superb archive and pictorial record of the early years of diesel traction in Scotland are revealed.
After the Modernisation Plan of 1955 transformed the railways of our country, diesel and rapid traction engines took off. It soon became evident that some classes were going to be located in specific regions and Scotland became home to a number of diesel classes not seen anywhere else on the BR network. Some successful (including the future Classes 26 and 27), some (like the Class 17 Claytons) consigned to the scrap yard soon after the steam locomotives they were designed to replace.
Unlike many other photographers, Anderson continued to record the railway scene after the demise of steam, making this special collection of mono and colour photography a unique portrait of diesels in Scotland over two decades.
