Locomotives in Detail 8: Maunsell 4-6-0 Lord Nelson Class
P Swift
Publisher: IAN ALLAN
Publication Date: 30/08/2007
Format: Hardback
The heroic Lord Nelson
Launched in 1926, Maunsell’s LN-class four-cylinder 4-6-0 was described by the Southern Railway as the most powerful passenger engine in Britain. Although the Lord Nelson class was not produced in great numbers, its place in the history of British steam locomotive design is assured after more than 35 years of sterling and reliable service. The sole survivor of the class, No 850 Lord Nelson, is part of the National Collection and is still in full working order.
Peter Swift’s detailed book provides a comprehensive account of the development and history of the Lord Nelson, including the modifications it underwent over the years before it was finally withdrawn from service at the end of 1962. The detailed text is supported by an excellent range of mono and colour photographs, as well as a series of 4mm-scale line drawings.
This addition to the Locomotives in Detail series provides a fascinating insight into one of the true heroes of British locomotive history.
