Frank Mares

Mission Accomplished
Publisher: GRUB STREET
Publication Date: 01/05/2007
Format: Hardback
A valiant foreign flyboy!

When Nazi troops entered Czechoslovakia in 1939, Frank Mares was determined to fight for his country’s freedom. Finding himself unable to do so at home, he embarked on an incredible journey that would take him across Europe to Britain, where he became an RAF fighter pilot and engaged the enemy on many occasions.

His thrilling personal account of his mission recounts his courageous expedition through Poland and France, traversing hostile borders and territories. Constantly evading arrest and faced with uncertainly and frustration at every turn, his crusade was one of single-minded resilience and fortitude.

Mares flew Hurricanes with 601 Squadron, and in all the airborne battles he undertook with Germany’s Luftwaffe he was never shot down. In 1942 he was decorated with the DFM and the Czech War Cross.

This gripping story – illustrated with a historic collection of black-and-white photographs – is a vivid and engaging account of one man’s heroic determination to regain his country’s liberty.
