Bloody sunset over the Inca empire
The ancient chronicles tell of a young Inca king, Manco Inca, who fled deep into the Amazon jungle after the Spaniards conquered his empire. There Manco built a city at Vilcabamba which held out against the Spaniards for 35 years. Finally, in 1572, the Spaniards overwhelmed this last Inca stronghold – and the city was rapidly overtaken by the jungle, receding into legend and myth. Kim McQuarrie tells the astonishing story of how Vilcabamba was founded and of the Inca resistance to the Spanish.
More than 300 years later, an American explorer, Hiram Bingham, stumbled on the ruins of Macchu Picchu, and announced to the world that he had found Vilcabamba. For 50 years, the academic community agreed with him until in 1967 another American explorer discovered the real Vilcabamba.
The author spent a year living with an Amazonian tribe, who shared many of their stories of their forefathers’ dealings with the Incas. His account is a haunting tale of a great civilisation’s destruction.
