Lloyd George & Churchill
Richard Toye

Publication Date: 16/03/2007
Format: Hardback
‘L. G. was born a cad and never forgot it; Winston was born a gentleman and never remembered it.’
– Stanley Baldwin
David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill were arguably the two most significant figures in 20th-century British politics. Richard Toye’s brilliant study considers the personal and political relationship between these great leaders.
Churchill’s ministerial career spanned 50 years. Lloyd George’s spell in office was far shorter but equally significant. Together they were involved in many key political developments, from the birth of the welfare state to the two World Wars.
The two men’s characters offer significant contrasts. Lloyd George was a notorious philanderer and seller of honours, but a wonderful listener, speaker and organiser. Churchill was irreproachable in his private life, but lacked Lloyd George’s empathy.
Their lengthy and complex relationship involved both jealousy and mutual affection. They often fought, both as colleagues within the Liberal Party, and afterwards, when their political paths diverged.
In drawing on wide-ranging sources, the author convincingly challenges the predominant view of the inseparable friends who never felt personal bitterness however much they might differ on policy.
