Going off the rails in Bradford

In its heyday, Bradford boasted the fifth biggest fleet of trolleybuses in the country. Operating them for over sixty years, Bradford has the unique distinction of being the most longstanding user. When the system finally closed on 26 March 1972, it was the last survivor of the fifty municipalities or companies who had used this efficient, economical and silent form of transportation.

Trolleybuses enjoyed the unique benefits of being neither a motorbus nor a heavy motor car, and so did not come under the legislation of Road Traffic Acts, including periodic recertification. As a result, Bradford’s ‘make do and mend’ approach to rebodying and maintaining its fleet produced a wide range of chassis/body combinations from other systems’ cast-offs.

This tribute to Bradford and its trolleybuses features eighty colour photographs, each with a detailed caption, covering the period 1950 to 1972 and showing the many variations that could be seen in those final years.
