Navigating the complex railway network

The first edition of this atlas, published in 2000, was a most useful book, but the continuing evolution of the railway industry over the past six years has rendered the original volume redundant. This new and fully revised and improved edition reflects the state of the railway industry in 2006 and, together with the original, forms a fascinating historical record.

It is now more than a decade since the beginning of the process to split British Rail’s passenger services into more than 20 different Train Operating Companies (TOCs). Some of the resulting franchises were relatively straightforward, such as Island Line, which took over the single route on the Isle of Wight. Others however, such as Central and Cross-Country, were highly complex with services that interlinked with those of many other operators.

Atlas of Train Operating Companies clearly shows Britain’s railway network as it stands in 2006, and is an essential portrait of the complexity of the current passenger franchise structure.
