Full speed ahead!
In the early 1970s, British Rail faced crisis on its long-haul Inter-City services. Constrained by an unwillingness to invest in major new high-speed routes, the BR engineers confronted the challenge of constructing a train that could compete with cars and airliners while still utilising existing track.
The solution was the High Speed Train (or InterCity 125). Capable of travelling at 125mph, the HST first saw service in 1976 on the Western Region, and was subsequently introduced to the East Coast Main Line, the Midland Main Line and to InterCity cross-country services.
The mid-1980s saw the arrival of InterCity branding and livery and then privatisation, with the class operated by five Train Operating Companies. Many HSTs have been re-engined while more recently there have been the first withdrawals and transfers to departmental stock. Nonetheless, the HST remains an essential part of the rolling-stock on many long-distance services. In following the HST’s illustrious career, this superb tribute gives full due to an iconic contemporary design.
