British Railways Locomotives 1962
Chris Banks

Publication Date: 01/12/2005
Format: Hardback
A pivotal year in Britain’s railway history
This is a comprehensive record of all the locomotives that operated on Britain’s main line railways during 1962, one of the seminal years in the history of British Railways.
1962 was the year that both Eastern and Western regions were effectively dieselised throughout, and the first of the Brush Type 4s (the future Class 47) were introduced. It was also the year that the last of the Class 40s and the Warships were constructed, and the last of the ex-GWR King 4-6-0s and the ex-LMS Princess Royal Pacifics were withdrawn. The following year, 1963, was to witness the publication of the Beeching report, the infamous Reshaping of Britain’s Railways that resulted in the closure of much of the nation’s railway network.
Here, Chris Banks examines all those locomotives withdrawn during the year as well as those new locomotives and DMUs that entered service during the period. Alongside the detailed tables, the book includes 275 contemporary illustrations.
